The Garda Commissioner has said the increase in the number of deaths on the roads is of "great concern".
Drew Harris was speaking after four people lost their lives on Irish roads in a 24-hour period.
A man and a woman in their 30s died following a crash in Co Limerick last night.
The collision, between a car and a van, happened on the N21 at Ballycarrane, Patrickswell at around 9.25pm.
Gardaí said the occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies have been removed to University Hospital Limerick.
They have been named locally as Brian Mullin and Sharon Ryan, both from Co Mayo.
Mr Mullin, from Cloghan's Hill near Ballinrobe, is the older brother of Mayo footballer Oisín Mullin.
Ms Ryan, a fitness instructor, is from Carras near the Galway-Mayo border.
The occupants of the van - a man and woman in their 20s and a baby boy - were taken to UHL for treatment but are believed to be uninjured.
The road remained closed for many hours after last night's crash, with diversions in place.

Speaking in Athlone, Commissioner Harris said there will be a strong garda presence on the roads this coming bank holiday weekend.
He appealed to people to slow down, never drink and drive, wear a seatbelt and do not use your phone while driving.
Gardaí in Limerick appealed to anyone who may have witnessed last night's collision to contact them.
Road users who were travelling in the area and who may have camera or dash cam footage are asked to make it available to gardaí.
