An Irish man in his 30s is in a critical condition in hospital in Spain, after he was shot in a nightclub on the Costa Del Sol in the early hours of this morning.
It appears the man was the innocent victim of a violent row that broke out in the Opium Beach Club in Marbella at around 1am.
Five people were taken to hospital with stab and gunshot wounds, including the Irish man who was shot in the chest, and a woman who was also shot in the body and seriously injured.
The suspected gunman is also being treated in hospital.
Images on social media show a fight breaking out in the nightclub before a gun is produced, shots are fired, and people can be seen running from the scene.
It's believed the row involved Dutch and Moroccan nationals. Spanish police say four people sustained gunshot injuries while the fifth received stab wounds.
Gardaí say the Irish man is not known to them, and it’s not clear if he lives in the area or was on holiday at the time.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is aware of the incident and is ready to provide consular assistance but has not been contacted.
