Five family members in hospital after Tallaght house fire

Five members of a family are in hospital following a house fire in Tallaght in Dublin overnight, with a father and son in critical condition.

The boy's mother is said to be in a serious condition in hospital.

The couple's daughter raised the alarm shortly after 2am. Neighbours on Deerpark Drive heard her calling from an upstairs window.

They called emergency services and rushed to help the family.

The young woman was first able to pass her baby son out of the window to neighbour Damien Pilkington.

"I pulled the wheelie bin actually in front of the window and I got on top of the window and I caught the baby," Mr Pilkington told RTÉ News.

The young woman was then helped to escape from the upstairs window.

Neighbours then attempted to help the remaining family members trapped inside the house.

"We tried to get in the front window but the smoke was too bad," Patrick Murray said. "So I went up over the back wall here ... the lads had gone through the gardens.

"When we got into the back garden the back window was smashed and the fire was all in the back room, all in the corner.

"We just tried to get in and see if we could see anything and I spotted the little boy in the corner of the room and we went in and we just got him out."

Damien Pilkington, Patrick Murray and Jamie Hill helped to rescue the family

Mr Murray and neighbour Jamie Hill carried the boy outside and Mr Hill began CPR.

"We continued to work on him for a few minutes while the paramedics were on their way, when the paramedics got here we guided them in through the back, and they took over from there, thank God."

Dublin Fire Brigade sent engines from Tallaght, Nutgrove and Dolphin's Barn stations, as well as three Dublin Fire Brigade ambulances and an ambulance from the National Ambulance Service.

Firefighters with breathing apparatus were able to rescue the couple who were upstairs.

All five family members were treated at the scene and were then taken to hospital.

The young woman and baby have received treatment for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Those who live on Deerpark Drive and the surrounding streets expressed their shock at what happened and their support for the family.

"Please God they are all okay, my thoughts are with them, my prayers are with them," Mr Murray said.

"Every one of the neighbours chipped in, everyone was trying to help, everyone was trying to keep everyone calm and do what they could," Mr Hill said.

"It's devastating, the family are here ten, 15 years, we're all here since the estate is built.

"It's a tight-knit community … hopefully [we’ll] all come together and support the family and help them through it."

Gardaí have confirmed that a technical examination of the scene has been carried out.

RTÉ News understands that the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
