Woman arrested as woman in her 80s found dead in Dublin

A woman in her 40s has been arrested after the body of a woman in her 80s was discovered near Dublin city centre.

The woman was found in her home on First Avenue, off Seville Place just before midday.

Gardaí have begun a murder investigation and appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

The scene has been preserved and forensic specialists will examine the home later today.

Gardaí were called to the house at 11.50am and found the body of the woman in a downstairs room.

She had been stabbed to death. Her body remains at the scene.

Neighbours reported seeing a woman leaving the house in a distressed state this morning.

The coroner has also been notified and a post-mortem examination is to be carried out later today.

The woman who was arrested is being held on suspicion of murder at Store Street Garda Station.

She can be questioned for up to 24 hours. She has been offered medical assistance and the services of a solicitor.

It is understood she knew the victim.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact Store Street on 01 666 8089, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

They say they are following a definite line of inquiry and are not looking for anyone else at present.
