The country's latest greenway routes are due to open to the public in Co Kerry this summer.

Kerry County Council has voted to adopt the brand name 'the Kingdom of Kerry Greenways' for the two routes along old railway lines in the north of the county.

The Tralee to Fenit greenway project will run for 11.2km while the Listowel to Abbeyfeale greenway will run for 10.5km before joining the Limerick Greenway at Abbeyfeale.

Welcoming the choice of brand name, the Head of Kerry County Council's Tourism Unit, Niamh O'Sullivan said the name will "act as an overarching or collective name for new greenways and will apply to other greenway projects in Kerry in the coming years".

Meanwhile, Kerry County Council is progressing plans for the long-planned South Kerry greenway which will run for 30km between Glenbeigh and Cahersiveen.

First mooted ten years ago, the green light was finally given for the long-awaited project in February following the Supreme Court's rejection of two applications seeking leave to appeal a High Court ruling that planning approval for the greenway was valid.
