At least one person has died and more than 30 have been injured in an explosion at a nightclub in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku.

A spokesperson for the country's Interior Ministry was quoted by the AP news agency as saying the explosion was believed to have been caused by a gas leak and that investigations were ongoing.

The country's ambassador to the US Khazar Ibrahim, in a tweet, said: "Very sad news about casualties as a result of explosion at the club downtown Baku. My condolences and prayers."

AP said the Health Ministry reported some 24 of the injured had been taken to hospital, most suffering from burns.

Emergency services were reportedly called to the club at 3am local time today and extinguished the fire before it could spread.
