Man arrested in relation to 1991 murder of Sinn Féin councillor

A 56-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Sinn Féin councillor, who was shot dead in Co Donegal around 30 years ago.

Edward Fullerton, a father of six, was shot dead at his home in Buncrana.

Four armed and masked men had taken a family hostage in Buncrana the night before and held them for over three hours, before stealing their car and forcing their way into the Fullerton home.

The murder was claimed by the loyalist paramilitary group UDA.

The Fullerton family and Sinn Féin have long campaigned for an independent inquiry.

The suspect is being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be questioned for up to three days.

Gardaí arrested the 56-year-old man as he was about to attend church in Muff, Co Donegal at around 10am this morning.

He was taken to Letterkenny Garda Station, where he can be questioned for up to three days.

This arrest is the first to be made in the Republic of Ireland during the course of the 30-year investigation.
