A Galway priest has pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a boy in the city in the 1990s.

Fr Tom Brady pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault just before a jury was selected for his trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court.

Fr Tom Brady, aged 65, with an address at Cloonarkin Drive in Oranmore, Co Galway, was a priest attached to the Diocese of Galway in Galway city in the mid-1990s when he sexually assaulted a boy who is now in his 40s.

His trial was due to get underway today at Galway Circuit Criminal Court, however just before a jury was selected, the court was told that he would be pleading guilty.

He was charged with one count of sexual assault contrary to Section 1 of the Criminal Justice (Rape) Amendment Act 1990.

The assault happened between July 1994 and May 1995 in the parochial house where he worked.

His victim was 12 years old at the time.

After pleading guilty today, his counsel Barry White SC asked the court to adjourn the case until February next year when the facts will be heard and a victim impact statement will be presented to the court.

Judge Rory McCabe adjourned the case to a date in February.
