The Government is expected to seek more detail from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) on where Covid passes might be used outside of hospitality.
The issue will be discussed by the Cabinet Covid Committee on Monday evening where Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan is set to hold discussions with the Taoiseach and senior ministers.
These meetings are also usually attended by NPHET's Professor Philip Nolan and Health Service Executive CEO Paul Reid.
There is a view in Government that a detailed breakdown of the sectors where Covid passes might be used in future must be provided by NPHET.
The CMO did mention the possibility of passes for gyms, hairdressers and barbers at a press conference on Wednesday.
Today some senior figures in the Coalition have described the idea of extending the Covid pass rule for gyms as "obvious".
Although a wider use of Covid passes would require the introduction of new regulations, this is not viewed as being a difficult process.
Already the use of Covid passes for hospitality are underpinned by legislation until February 9, 2022.
Any widening of the Covid pass rule would also run until this date.
