A special €100 per week payment made to student nurses for the period of placements during the pandemic is to be extended until next March.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly secured agreement at Cabinet for a package of measures for student nurses and midwives worth €12m.

The €100 payment was provided for the last academic year, but it will now be extended, with back payments to September.

The Cabinet also agreed that intern student nurses in fourth year will get an increase in payments of 12.5%.

There will also be a doubling of the accommodation allowance for this group, from €50 to €100 a week.

The measures follow the recommendation of the McHugh Report, which reviewed student nurse payments and was due to be published today.
