Halloween celebrations have passed off relatively peacefully this evening, with emergency services reporting a quieter night than usual.

Dublin Fire Brigade reported just 131 callouts by 8.15pm, with 89 of those bonfire-related.

This compares to 298 callouts last year, with 229 for bonfires - a 60% reduction.

Ambulance calls increased, with 401 call-outs, however this was expected given last year's Covid-19 lockdown.

There was only one serious firework injury reported, which occurred in the north city.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer with Dublin Fire Brigade Greg O'Dwyer said the bad weather had been a factor in the quieter night.

However, he said it was particularly due to the work of local authorities in seizing bonfire material.

Trevor Maher of Dublin City Council's waste services said the amount of bonfire material seized was slightly down, but the amounts involved were noticeably bigger, and it is expected the total haul will exceed the 550 tonnes seized last year.

Official events in the capital were limited and there was only one public firework display in Cherry Orchard.

The two biggest celebrations - the Otherworld Festival in Ballymun and Frightnight in Finglas - were merged this year.

There was also parades in Ballyfermot and Inchicore along with events in the North Strand as children got to celebrate Halloween in public again.

Meanwhile, trick-or-treating made a welcome return to doorsteps around the country too this year after being ruled out last year due to the pandemic.

Following disappointment last year, events have been limited but there has been a digital display in Smithfield in the capital.
