The Department of Health has been notified of a further 2,002 cases of Covid-19.

There are 354 people in hospital who have tested positive for the virus, down one since yesterday.

Of those, 73 are in intensive care, a rise of four.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said today's case numbers reflect an increased number of positive tests collected over the last three days.

He added that the total number of cases reported in the last seven days (8,845 cases) is fewer than the previous seven days (9,115 cases).

The seven-day moving average of daily cases stands at 1,264 today, compared to 1,302 a week ago.

Dr Glynn added: "We will continue to monitor this situation closely to see if the trend in new infections over recent days is sustained.

"If you are experiencing a high temperature, dry cough, or flu like symptoms please stay at home - do not go to work or socialise.

"To keep yourself and your family safe please continue to regularly wash your hands, wear a mask when appropriate, open windows and ventilate indoor spaces, and choose outdoors where possible for meeting others."

The figures come as other senior health officials have urged the need for caution, given the rise in recent hospitalisations.

Health Service Executive CEO Paul Reid said hospitalisations were "up 17% this week".

He also added that of those being treated in intensive care, 67% were not vaccinated, while 3% were partially vaccinated.

"We're all getting on with our lives more. But just a need for caution ... The vaccines are protecting and helping us all to move on."

Currently, local areas with the highest incidence of disease include Mallow in Co Cork, Waterford City South, Longford, and Lifford-Stranorlar in Co Donegal.

Local areas with the lowest incidence include Wicklow, Conamara (Connemara) south and Midleton.

The HSE is operating walk-in vaccine clinics in several locations across Ireland this weekend. Some are offering dose one while others offer both doses.

In Northern Ireland, there were 1,276 new infections and two deaths recorded in the past 24 hours.

Elsewhere, the prevalence of Covid-19 infections in England has increased to around 1 in 70 people in the week ending 2 October, Britain's Office for National Statistics said.

The new figures mean rates of infection are at the highest level since the end of August.
