A 20-year-old Irish man has been arrested following the death of 22-year-old Limerick man on the island of Ios in Greece.

A statement from Greek police said that 22-year-old Niall O'Brien died after following an altercation on Monday.

Police officers arrested the suspect at the scene.

It is understood that consular assistance is being given to the Irish 20-year-old, who is currently in custody.

A separate consular team is assisting Mr O'Brien's family.

Mr O'Brien, who was in his early 20s and from Castletroy, was studying Financial Maths at the University of Limerick.

In an email to the campus community, UL President Professor Kerstin Mey said all of their thoughts and prayers are with Mr O'Brien's family.

He was a well known sportsman who played GAA with Broadford, and was a member of Castletroy Golf Club.
