New routines after lockdown see some dog owners struggle

Some homeowners with dogs are struggling as they readjust to life with the easing of the pandemic restrictions, Dogs Trust Ireland has said.

The charity said it is receiving eight requests every day from people who wish to surrender their dogs as lockdown restrictions ease.

It is seeking to help them with an interactive 'Life after Lockdown' pack for dog owners.

Dogs Trust Ireland Head of Communications Ciara Byrne said: "Our number one priority is to keep dogs in their homes".

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, she urged anyone who is thinking about giving up their dog "to contact us and we will be able to help".

The charity has so far received the same number of requests this year as in the whole of 2020.

Ms Byrne said: "It is the change ... it could have been a dog that they have had before Covid [or not] who has adjusted to owners being around 24/7."

Dog behaviour can change as people return to social activities and the workplace.

Dogs Trust's 'Life after Lockdown' pack includes tips on how to ease dogs out of lockdown and how to teach them to be on their own, to play with toys and to meet people calmly.
