A 22-year-old man has died after falling 20 metres into a blowhole from cliffs near Garretstown beach in Co Cork.

The man has been named locally as Conor King, from Broadale, Douglas, in Cork city.

He was a third-year biomedical engineering student at the Munster Technological University in Cork.

He was part of a large group who were camping overnight on the beach.

A 23-year-old friend who went to his assistance was rescued and taken to hospital where he is being treated for hypothermia.

The alarm was raised at around 11.30pm.

A team of volunteers from the Old Head/Seven Heads Coast Guard Unit, local divers, gardaí and ambulance personnel attended the scene.

The operation was overseen by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at Valentia in Co Kerry.

The body was recovered from the water by divers, and taken to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Head of Student Affairs at MTU Dr Dan Collins said: "Our thoughts are with Conor's family to whom we offer our deepest sympathy, and with his friends, as well as his classmates at MTU and colleagues in the department and at the faculty.

"We will continue to keep Conor’s family in our thoughts as well as the other young man currently recovering."
