The HSE has said that the National Ambulance Service will increase capacity in the next few weeks in order to accelerate the delivery of vaccines to those who are housebound.
Over 1,800 people have been referred by their GPs for the service but frustration has been expressed by some families who are still waiting for a vaccine.
One of those is 99-year-old Joe Kenneally in Kilshanny in Co Clare. A retired farmer, he is still waiting for a Covid-19 vaccine while being looked after by his family and carers.
He shared his lifelong love of songs and local history with visitors until Covid-19 drastically limited his social interaction with the community.
His son, Joe Kenneally Jnr, said relatives had been contacted over two months ago to confirm their wish for a vaccine for Joe Snr. They have not heard anything since.
He said it was a "very frustrating and worrying" time for the family because of the ongoing need for carers coming into their father's home and the possible threat of the virus.
"We hear that the vaccine programme is now moving on to the next age group, but we are still waiting," Mr Kenneally said.
The issue is to be raised by the Irish Rural Link Network with the Department of Health.
In a statement, the Health Service Executive said that the demand for the housebound programme has been far greater than initially envisaged.
It said the project is complex, involving the triaging of referrals, logistics of vaccine delivery and the requirement for over 30 minutes at each residence.
The HSE said that because housebound people in need of vaccines are dispersed across the country, it can also take ambulance staff a "considerable amount of time" per visit to reach their destinations.
It also said that the National Ambulance Service will increase capacity in the next few weeks in order to accelerate the delivery of vaccines.
The HSE said it would like to "reassure individuals and their families" still awaiting a jab that it will contact them directly over the next week and administer the Covid vaccine within a three-week period.
