US President Joe Biden will travel to the United Kingdom and Belgium in June for his first overseas trip since taking office, the White House has said.

The trip aims to highlight the US president's "commitment to restoring our alliances, revitalising the transatlantic relationship, and working in close cooperation with our allies," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

The announcement was made as Mr Biden concluded hosting a global climate summit that marked a renewed US engagement in climate efforts.

Mr Biden will attend the G7 Summit in Cornwall from 11-13 June, where he will hold bilateral meetings with G7 leaders including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the White House said.

From there, Mr Biden will travel to Brussels for the NATO Summit on 14 June.

"President Biden will affirm the United States' commitment to NATO, transatlantic security, and collective defense," Ms Psaki said.

The statement added: "We look forward to having further details to share about this trip soon, including potential additional elements."

Asked at a press briefing if Mr Biden would visit Ireland during his trip to Europe in June, Ms Psaki said there is not currently a plan to visit Ireland but other stops may be announced.

"I announced the confirmed parts of his trip at this point in time. I don't have any additional stops to add but the trip is two months / one month / six weeks away, it's all running together, and if we have more components of the trip to announce we will do that but there is not currently a planned Ireland stop."
