Gardaí are investigating the death of a woman whose body was discovered in a car in north Cork.

The woman, who was aged in her 70s, was discovered at around 4pm.

The alarm had been raised an hour earlier when a person out walking came upon the car on fire in woodlands at Annakisha, around 8km from Doneraile.

A unit from Mallow Fire Brigade attended the scene, but the car was already burnt out when they arrived.

The woman's body was subsequently found in the car.

A separate alarm was raised several kilometres away and a search was undertaken, which resulted in a man being rescued from the River Awbeg by gardaí.

The man is understood to be married, aged in his 60s and from a rural area on the other side of the Cork/Limerick border.

The man was hypothermic when he was taken from the water. He was given medical assistance at the scene before he was brought to Cork University Hospital, where he is being treated.

A garda investigation is under way to establish what happened.

The area around the burnt out car and an area around a second car found nearby have been sealed off by gardaí and will be preserved overnight.

The Garda Technical Bureau will conduct a technical examination at both scenes tomorrow.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster is expected to visit the scene before the woman's body is removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Gardaí say that the results of the post-mortem examination will determine the course of the investigation.

No arrests have been made.

It is understood gardaí are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident at this stage.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was in the Doneraile area between 3pm and 5pm to contact Fermoy Garda Station on 025-82100 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.

They are particularly keen to speak to anyone with mobile phone footage or dashcam footage.
