Gardaí have seized as much cocaine this year than all the drug seizures combined for last year, according to the 2019 annual garda report.

It also shows that 14 assassination attempts were thwarted.

The Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (DOCB) has captured €30m worth of cocaine so far in 2020.

Last year, it seized €21m worth of various drugs in total, while other garda units confiscated €9m worth of drugs, bringing the 2019 total to €30m.

Around half of that haul was cannabis resin or herb, followed by €7m worth of cocaine and €4m worth of heroin.

The report says the Criminal Assets Bureau focused on associates of organised crime groups last year, targeting the lower level tiers of criminals.

It also looked at more serious crime gangs, in an effort to disrupt the progression of individuals within those groups.

The DOCB seized 18 firearms and over 300 rounds of ammunition.

There are 200,000 firearms legally held in this country for vermin control, target shooting and hunting, the report states.

The threat level from terrorist groups remains "moderate", which means "an attack is possible but not likely" and is unchanged from 2018.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said progress has been made in implementing the 'Policing Service for our Future' programme and 344 gardaí have been reassigned to frontline policing duties.

There were 11 new Divisional Protective Services Units established in 2019, bringing the total to 15 DPSUs. This was expanded again this year to include every garda division.
