The two missing hill walkers on the Dingle Peninsula in Co Kerry have been located safe and well.

The man and woman were found by a joint team of Kerry Mountain Rescue and Dingle Coast Guard.

Frank Heidtke of the Dingle Coastguard said the man and the woman were located about 4km from Annascaul Lake.

"They were not far from Windy Gap, which is a very exposed area. They are in good health, but very glad to have been found," said Mr Heidtke.

The search involving Dingle Coast Guard, Kerry Mountain Rescue and local gardaí had centred on a wide search area in the mountains to the north of Annascaul Lake.

The alarm was raised yesterday evening when the two walkers failed to return to their car. Conditions on the mountains were described as being very poor, with heavy mist and fog.

The search was assisted by Valentia Coast Guard. Poor visibility had prevented the deployment of the coast guard helicopter.

Up to 40 rescuers were divided in to a number of teams which searched the mountains above Gleann Tí an Easaigh, Macha na Bó and Annascaul Lake.

The missing hill walkers were located shortly after 11.30pm last night and helped down off the mountain.
