President Michael D Higgins is among those sending good wishes to Van Morrison on his 75th birthday.

In a statement the President said that his contribution to music and songwriting is of a world standard.

He said his lyrics are enjoyed not only on an all-Ireland basis but all over the world.

President Higgins was one of 75 people asked to record special video tributes to the Belfast-born songwriter.

Hot Press Magazine asked a host of well-known Irish artists to record videos of his songs.

One of those who took part, Glen Hansard, described him an artist who has always followed his own path throughout his whole career and has always done his own thing.

Singer Mary Coughlan said that she would normally never attempt to cover a song of his, because she holds him in such esteem. But when Hot Press asked her to record a cover for his birthday she said she would.

Over the past three weeks, Hot Press has broadcast videos each night. Tonight 11 videos featuring artists including Hozier, Glen Hansard, Mary Coughlan and Bob Geldof will be broadcast on Hotpress's YouTube channel.

Moya Brennan, Altan, Paul Casey featuring Terri Hooley, Brian Kennedy, Malaki, John Spillane will also join the celebrations tonight.

The tribute, entitled 'Rave On, Van Morrison' continues until 13 September.
