States of Mind: Biden's Big Moment

A Democrat welcoming a Republican with open arms is rare these days.

However Congressman Brendan Boyle is embracing it.

"This is a break the glass, emergency level election. I welcome their support," he told RTÉ's States of Mind podcast.

It's as many Republicans including former Ohio Governor John Kasich and ex-Secretary of State Colin Powell took to the virtual Democratic National Convention stage this week to pledge their support to Joe Biden.

Their 'vote for Joe' goes beyond ideological differences between Democrats and Republicans, said Rep Boyle, as he believes that they too see a second term of Donald Trump in office as "dangerous".

"There’s a certain aspect of this that doesn’t have to do with issues and is non-ideological. It’s that in my view, we have a deeply unstable person sitting behind the resolute desk in the oval office," he said.

The anti-Trump Republicans coming out of the woodwork was one of the major talking points at this week’s DNC while party leaders attempted to bring progressives and conservatives together in a vote against the president.

As the Democrats unleashed a new type of political conference, this week’s States of Mind looks back at the week that was - from those defecting Republicans to Biden’s big night out and the stories from those ‘who know Joe'.
