Charities can apply for funding from the €5.5m raised from RTÉ Does Comic Relief from today.

The event which took place at the end of June will benefit charities which are working with older people, those with disabilities, and those medically at risk from Covid-19.

The funds are being dispersed by the event's charity partner - the Community Foundation of Ireland.

Chief Executive Denise Charlton told RTÉ's News at One that donations are still coming in and applications will be open until the end of September, adding that all the details are available on the charity's website.

Ms Charlton said they are targeting two areas - digital funding to help groups invest in software and hardware, and those who are adapting to changes around Covid-19.

She said the money given by the public will be dispersed all over the country, and that all communities "will be given a shot".

Ms Charlton stressed that charities are struggling at the moment and that the foundation is delighted to play a part in helping them.
