The acting chief medical officer Dr Ronan Glynn has confirmed that over 90% of new Covid-19 cases in Ireland have had their source of transmission identified, describing it as "positive".

Only four of the 53 latest infections were classed as community transmission, with 45 being associated with outbreaks or close contacts of a confirmed case.

Four out of five new cases were in people under 45 years of age.

Twenty-five were in Dublin, 19 in Laois and six in Kildare - counties which have seen clusters linked to a dog food factory in Naas and direct provision centres.

The remaining three infections were spread across two other counties.

Although no Covid-19 related deaths have been reported for three days in a row, the average number of new cases over the past five days has reached 47.

In light of this increase, Dr Glynn said it was a positive development that the source of transmission has been identified in nine out of 10 new cases.

He has called on people to "continue to adopt a prevention mindset"  and make good choices in order to protect themselves and others while attempting to live safely with Covid-19.
