Covid-19: One further death, 24 new cases

There has been one further death from Covid-19 reported in the past 24 hours, the Department of Health has confirmed. The number of cases has risen by 24.

This brings the total death toll here to 1,764 with 25,869 confirmed cases. 

Earlier today, it was reported that more than 15.8 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 638,271 have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

The HSE has tweeted a reminder to the public on how they can help contain the spread of Covid-19. "If you are going to see loved ones this weekend, please remember to keep two metres of a distance."

It also urged people to practise good hand hygiene.

Meanwhile work is continuing this weekend on completing the Government's plan for the reopening of schools at the end of next month.

The World Health Organization says data to date suggests 80% of Covid-19 infections are mild or asymptomatic, 15% are severe infection, requiring oxygen and 5% are critical, requiring ventilation.

Generally, you need to be 15 minutes or more in the vicinity of an infected person and within two metres of them, to be considered at-risk, or a close contact.
