Fears are growing for the future of 120 jobs at a US manufacturing company APTAR in Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

APTAR produces pump dispensing units for the perfume and cosmetic industry.

Management have been meeting the workers throughout the afternoon to inform them of developments. It is understood an announcement will be made tomorrow.

APTAR has been in Ballinasloe for over 20 years and is based at the IDA business park in the town.

The factory makes pumps for perfume sprays and beauty products. It has also been manufacturing  hand sanitisers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The US multinational supplies hundreds of millions of pump units worldwide for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.

The plant in Ballinasloe has expanded over the years and has a manufacturing facility of over 9,000 square metres.

The factory operates a 24/7 shift but had scaled back significantly over the past number of months.

Workers attended meetings this afternoon in small groups as part of social distancing measures with screens and speakers in place.

They emerged this evening without speaking to the media but a formal announcement from the company is expected tomorrow.
