Gardaí in Dublin have begun a murder investigation after a woman was found dead in her home in Hartstown.
The woman, who was 57, was attacked in the house in Willow Wood Grove in Hartstown this morning.
A 60-year-old man was arrested and is being detained at Blanchardstown Garda Station.
The woman was attacked in her home at around 11.30am.
It is understood a number of weapons, including a samurai sword and a meat cleaver, may have been used.
A third person who was in the house at the time appears to have witnessed at least part of the attack, and ran to a neighbour's house.
When gardaí arrived they had to use force to enter the house and make an arrest.
A forensic examination of the scene took place this afternoon and the woman's body was removed to the City Morgue.
A post-mortem examination will take place in the morning.
The victim was the mother of two children, a teenager, and an adult woman.
The detention period for the arrested man was suspended for a time while he was taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown for treatment for injuries.
It is understood that he knew the victim.
