Several Garda units respond to altercation in Salthill, Galway

Gardaí are maintaining an active presence in Salthill, Galway, after around 40 youths obstructed officers trying to arrest another youth there this evening.

The incident happened at around 7pm on the Salthill promenade, when two males were involved in an altercation.

When gardaí approached the pair to intervene, one youth is said to have become extremely aggressive and resisted arrest. 

A large number of youths surrounded and obstructed the officers during the stand-off. Several Garda units were called to the scene to restore order and disperse the crowd.

The scene where the incident occurred, near the Blackrock Diving Tower, is now calm. 

Two people were ultimately arrested. They were taken to Salthill Garda Station and released a short time later. A file on the matter will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. 

Galway council yesterday ordered a number of areas across the city to be closed off "to ensure social distancing" - including Blackrock Diving Tower.
