Deputy Garda Commissioner John Twomey has said the vast majority of people are adhering to the Covid-19 restrictions and are not travelling beyond 2km from home this Easter weekend.
However, he said some people are continuing to go on long cycles, while others are attempting to drive to the beaches in the good weather.
Gardaí have also reported a number of people who are travelling excessive distances for shopping and they cited an incident of a man travelling from Tipperary to Limerick to buy a trampoline.
Deputy Commissioner Twomey said that as it stands, the general public have done what has been asked of them and he appealed to people to continue to do so.
He said there was an intensive policing plan under way and he thanked the public for their co-operation and support.
More than 2,500 gardaí are manning checkpoints on the country's major roads this weekend. They are also patrolling towns, beauty spots and beaches.

In south Dublin, bathing areas at Seapoint, Sandycove and the Forty Foot have been closed in the interests of public health.
Gardaí have been instructed to operate a graduated policing plan to deal with the current restrictions on movement.
A very quiet checkpoint at Laragh and Glendalough this morning. One car was advised to go home – "just because" is not a reason for a journey. Thank you to the vast majority for complying with the public health guidelines.#StayAtHome #WashYourHands pic.twitter.com/1NihtEo2Px

Enforcement is a last resort and gardaí have been told only to use it when all other avenues have been exhausted.
Deputy Commissioner Twomey said today these regulations are about preventing the spread of Covid-19.
"If you don't think of the risk that you pose to other people, that is a real difficulty for An Garda Síochana and for all members of the public," he said.

He added however that gardaí will be trying to remind people of the regulations and will enforce the law only when necessary.
The Deputy Commissioner also moved to assure older people who are cocooning that gardaí will be on hand to help out in whatever way they can over the next few weeks.
