Kerry woman with cystic fibrosis wants respect for social distancing guidelines

A 27-year-old Co Kerry woman with cystic fibrosis (CF) has described her upset with people disregarding the coronavirus social distancing guidelines.

Speaking from her home just outside of Tralee this afternoon, Ashe Spillane said: "All weekend I saw so many people out in pubs or at events, not adhering to the social distancing guidelines and it's upsetting.

"Most people in my situation are trying our best not to catch Covid-19. It's hard when you see people dismissing social distancing and not taking it seriously."

Ms Spillane, who has been self-isolating since last week, explained that her brother also has CF and her father has multiple sclerosis. Sufferers of CF are particularly susceptible to lung infections.

"People's decisions and their lack of consideration for others can really impact my family," she said. "And I'm sure there are other families who are like us as well.

"I'm just urging people to abide by the social distancing guidelines. People are not being asked to lock themselves away. They are just being asked to distance themselves. You can still go out for a walk."

Ms Spillane, who celebrates her 28th birthday on Friday, said self-isolation was "tough, for a person who likes to be out and about".

"For a lot of people this is a scary time. There are a lot of people who are vulnerable. I can guarantee that if people look in their circles, they would realise that there is probably someone there who is at risk. I would just urge people to consider that.

"If we adhere to social distancing and the other guidelines, we'll get through this more quickly. So please, adhere to the guidelines and stay safe."
