The National Car Testing Service (NCTS) has confirmed that it will be the end of April before all defective lifts identified at NCT centres will be brought back into service.

Parts of the NCT test were suspended last month after the issue with the lifts was identified.

It followed a similar problem being identified at vehicle test centres in Northern Ireland.

In a statement this evening the NCTS said it had completed a detailed condition survey of all 106 vehicle lifts operating throughout its network of 47 centres.

It identified that 85 lifts remain in need of repair.

By next Tuesday it is expected that 14 of 47 test centres will have operational lifts.

Grant Henderson, General Manager, NCTS said: "Our aim is to ensure that we have lift availability in most centres as soon as possible. We expect that 50% of test lanes will be operating by the end of March and 100% by the end of April."
