Single tuna sells for €1.6m at new year auction in Japan

Japan's first tuna auction of the year was held this morning at a fish market in Tokyo, where a bluefin tuna was sold for 193 million yen (€1.6m), the second highest price in history.

The tuna was caught in waters off Japan's northern Aomori Prefecture and weighed 276kg.

The successful buyer was Kiyoshi Kimura, the owner of a sushi restaurant chain "Sushizanmai" which is headquartered in Tsukiji, near where the fish market was located before moving

Kimura is a regular at the New Year auction.

He was the successful bidder last year for the most expensive tuna on record, paying more than 336.6 million yen for a bluefin tuna.
