A do not consume water notice affecting over 7,785 Irish Water customers on the Bailieborough water supply in Co Cavan has been lifted with immediate effect.

Areas on the water supply include Virginia, Mullagh, Killinkere and Crossbane.

The notice had been in place since 13 December but Irish Water said recent water quality sampling in Bailieborough confirmed that the water is now safe to drink "following the optimisation of processes at the water treatment plant to deal with fluctuating manganese levels in the drinking water source at Skeagh Lake".

Elsewhere, a boil water notice in Cork on the Whitegate regional water supply was lifted on Friday.

It had been in place since 27 November.
