Glaslough in Co Monaghan named Ireland's tidiest town

The town of Glaslough in Co Monaghan has been awarded the title of Ireland's tidiest town.

There was a record number of 918 entrants in this year's Tidy Towns competition, which had the theme of "caring for our environment".

In the category of the tidiest small town, Blackrock, Co Louth was triumphant. 

In the category for tidiest large town, Westport, Co Mayo took the honours.

The award in the category of tidiest large urban centre was won by Ennis in Co Clare.

The awards were presented by Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring.

Mr Ring congratulated the winners of all categories, saying that the work of those involved in the Tidy Towns effort results in "the attractive and welcoming towns and villages we see all over the country and from which we all benefit".

The Tidy Towns competition has been running for more than 60 years.

Mr Ring today announced €1.4 million funding to support the work of the Tidy Towns committees around the country.
