The climate change election - that's how the Green Party's Dublin candidate Ciaran Cuffe billed the European Parliament contest just last month.

The main trend tonight coming from the RTE/TG4 Exit Poll, conducted by RED C, is a green wave propelling the Green Party into a position where they could take a seat in each of Ireland's three constituencies.

It's a dramatic development for the party which has not had an MEP since 2004, when Patricia McKenna lost her seat after serving two five-year terms.

The stars appeared to align for the party in the run-up to polling day, with a very strong performance by Green candidate Saoirse McHugh in the RTE Prime Time debate in the Midlands-North-West constituency.

And on polling day itself, the issue of climate change was all across the media as thousands of students took to the streets demanding political action in yet another school's strike.

That said, the issue of climate action already had a high media profile, with an Oireachtas Joint Committee recently debating how to retrieve Ireland's unwelcome reputation as a country which continually fails to live up to its international obligations.

The Green Party's social media slogan for this Euro campaign was #ThinkGreenVoteGreen - and that's what a large portion of the electorate appears to have done.
