Changes to driving guidelines will mean that people who suffer a minor stroke and recover well can be back on the road within a week.
Small strokes are known as a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) and up to now the driving cessation period was four weeks, provided that clinical recovery is satisfactory.
The details were announced today by the Road Safety Authority in association with the National Office for Traffic Medicine.
The authority has also launched new leaflets for drivers to make them more aware of the impact of health problems on their driving.
The new leaflet provides guidance on what drivers with medical conditions should do to help them drive safely, including managing and monitoring their condition, seeking advice and support from their doctor and where required, notifying the National Driver Learner Service about their condition.
