The SUSI online application system for the Student Grant Scheme for 2019 is now open.

Student Universal Support Ireland, the national student grant awarding body, expects to receive up to 99,000 applications over the coming months for further and higher education grants for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Students are advised to apply online through the SUSI website as soon as possible.

SUSI will be accepting applications in the usual way from Irish students intending to study approved courses in the UK, and from EU/ British citizens intending to study in Ireland, as they can continue to avail of student grants if eligible.

Brexit will not affect the grants available to eligible students who start their course in the 19/20 academic year.

The priority closing date for new applications is 11 July.

Students do not need to have their Leaving Certificate results, or to have accepted a course in order to submit an application.

They just have to provide details of the course they hope to study.

SUSI processed approximately 99,000 grant applications in the 2018/19 academic year, with almost 80,000 applicants assessed as eligible for grant support.

SUSI Communications and Information Services Manager Aoife Greene said: "Students should visit our website www.susi.ie and use our quick and easy online Eligibility Reckoner before making their application.

"This will give them an indication as to their eligibility for student grant funding.

"They can find all of the necessary information and advice on our website and social media, including videos and detailed guidance notes for making an application."
