A 25-year-old Dublin man has appeared in court in New York charged with assaulting Longford man Danny McGee, who died after being punched outside a pub in Queens in November.

Steven O'Brien, with an address at 42nd Street, Queens, New York was released on continuing bail and is due to appear in court again on 30 April.

Danny McGee, from Drumlish, Co Longford was found lying unresponsive on the ground outside the Gaslight Bar in Queens, New York shortly before 4am on Thanksgiving Day, 22 November.

The 21-year-old was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.

The cause of his death was determined to be a blunt impact injury to the head.

Prosecutors say Steven O'Brien punched Danny McGee once to the side of the head after the two men became engaged in a verbal row.

Speaking after today's court hearing, the accused man's lawyer Matthew Gartenberg said: "We are continuing to fight this case. Mr O'Brien is maintaining his innocence."
