The chair of the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee Sean Fleming is organising an expanded meeting next month, which will hear from the head of the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, Robert Watt.

Mr Watt has agreed to go before the PAC on Thursday 7 March to be questioned about financial oversight of the State's capital expenditure plans.

Several other Oireachtas Committees - Health, Finance, and Budgetary Oversight - have also sought to secure Mr Watt's attendance.

Mr Fleming told RTÉ News that he will liaise with the other Committee chairs and assess if some of their representatives could attend the PAC on 7 March.

He said such a joint meeting was a break with Oireachtas precedent, but he believed such a mechanism could avoid duplication.

Mr Watt had previously turned down a request to attend a meeting of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health which had hoped to question him about the overspend at the National Children’s Hospital.

The decision drew criticism from across the Oireachtas.

In his letter to Mr Fleming, Mr Watt said: "I wish to be helpful in terms of setting out for the Committee of Public Accounts the role of my department in relation to general capital expenditure.
