High winds overnight left hundreds of homes and businesses without power, mostly in the west of the country.

An ESB Networks spokeswoman said the outages represented a normal winter's day for the service, but she said the 'tail end of high winds' had had an impact on power lines.

Crews from ESB Networks were prepared for storm winds and are now working to restore power today.

According to the ESB powercheck website there were around 1,000 premises across the west and northwest without power this morning.

Around 500 homes and businesses in Donegal were affected, over 500 in Co Galway and over 100 in Co Mayo.

This afternoon, the number of premises without a power supply has dropped to around 800 with repair works set to continue through the day.
