Tragedy as teens killed in crush

Edendork team mates link arms around the coffin of Conor Currie, the 16-year-old along with Lauren Bullock, 17, and Morgan Barnard, 17, died after they were crushed at Greenvale Hotel in Cookstown, Co Tyrone, on St Patrick's Day.

D-Day 75th anniversary

A social media meme hoax plays on the fears and apprehension of some children and many parents causing widespread concerns over potential risks in taking on the "challenge".

Monkey business

A monkey was seized by gardaí along with firearms, ammunition and drugs in an operation in Dublin in April 2019. Two men and a woman were arrested as part of the investigation. The monkey was taken away by animal welfare officers.

Deadly Everest climb

More than 120 climbers scaled the world's highest mountain Everest, some were caught in the crowd of people on the slopes, leading to exhaustion, dehydration and death. Two Irish people died climbing the mountain in a deadly week in May that saw 10 people perish on the slopes.

Staff remove hundreds of bags of ballot papers at the European elections count at the RDS in Dublin in May.

Hundreds of kites fill the sky above North Bull Island, Clontarf, in June as the Dublin Kite Festival takes place.

Swimming bans after storm water overflow

Eight Dublin beaches close following a stormwater overflow at the Ringsend Waste Water Treatment Plant. Following heavy rainfall, there was an overflow at the plant that affected Dollymount, Merrion, Sandymount, Killiney, Sandycove, White Rock, Seapoint beaches and the Forty Foot in Dún Laoghaire.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump walk to attend a meeting on the south side of the Military Demarcation Line that divides North and South Korea in June.

Earning a crust

A rat became a social media sensation in September after a video emerged of the rodent scurrying out of a bread packet in the kitchen of a Dublin petrol station. The company said it was taking the incident very seriously and was conducting a full investigation. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland referred the matter to the Health Service Executive Environmental Health Service.

Stardust inquests

Families of some of the 48 people who died in the Stardust fire in 1981 welcome news in September that new  inquests will be held into the St Valentine's Day tragedy.

Families seek political asylum at US border

A US Border Patrol agent apprehends a mother and daughter from Ecuador in September in Penitas, Texas. The undocumented immigrants had been hiding for hours in a cotton field after border agents detected and chased their group earlier in the day. 

US Vice-President Pence visits Ireland

Mike Pence visits Ireland in September during which he and wife Karen meet Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and his partner Matthew Barrett at Farmleigh House in Dublin.

Artist Rosita Sweetman pictured with her collection from 50+ different artists who completed a piece of work, through sculpture, paintings and photographs of the Virgin Mary for an exhibition in September.

Kim on sacred mountain horse ride

Kim Jong Un is seen riding a white horse on a sacred mountain in October, photos that experts say is heavy with symbolism and may indicate a policy announcement. The images were replicated in December as nuclear talks with the United States stalled and a looming end-of-year deadline was set by North Korea for a concession from Washington.

Environmental 'blood' protest

London police officers outside the Treasury building in Westminster in October, where Extinction Rebellion campaigners sprayed 1,800 litres of fake blood from a fire engine.

Essex lorry deaths

Thirty-nine Vietnamese people are found dead in a refrigerated lorry container in Essex in November. The bodies of eight females and 31 males were discovered in the trailer. Three men from Northern Ireland are subsequently charged in connection with the incident.

Brexit highlights political divide

Anti-Brexit and pro-Brexit protesters demonstrate outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster in January. The divisions in the UK over leaving the EU continue throughout the year.

Prince gives 'disastrous' interview on Epstein

Britain's Prince Andrew faces fresh scrutiny over allegations he had sex with a trafficked teenager and about his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in November. The prince gave what was widely viewed as a "disastrous" interview to BBC Newsnight and BBC's Panorama later broadcast an interview with his accuser Virginia Giuffre.

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross tries out the New Virtual Reality training headset, which is part of an initiative that allows Dublin Bus drivers cycle the city's Streets to give them the cyclist perspective.

Migrants found on truck on ferry to Rosslare

An ambulance on the Stena Horizon ferry where up to 16 migrants were found alive in the back of truck on a ferry, which arrived in Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford, from Cherbourg.

€1.8m 'trouser press' in Dáil

An image emerges in December of a new Dáil printer showing a pair of trousers hanging alongside the unused machine.The picture prompted some to dub it the most expensive "trouser press" in history after an official report confirmed the total costs associated with the printer hit an estimated €1.8m.

Johnson wins thumping majority

Boris Johnson makes a statement in Downing Street as the Conservative Party is returned to power with an increased majority in the general election in December as Labour is swept aside.
