Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin has said it is prioritising a review of 335 positive BRCA genetic tests, to ensure that the correspondence about the positive result was communicated correctly to the referring clinician.

The hospital said it will then review the negative BRCA tests.

Around 3,500 tests are understood to be involved.

It follows what the hospital said it believed was an isolated case of a transcription error with one test result.

An adult female patient was incorrectly told by the hospital that she did not have the BRCA gene.

The woman has since developed ovarian cancer.

The hospital said it cannot discuss individual patient cases.

Crumlin has also said it wants to reassure all patients who have undergone BRCA testing, that there is no concern regarding the accuracy of the result of the test.

The tests are done in a British laboratory.

Patients can contact a dedicated Genetics helpline at the hospital at:  01 4096219 Mon-Fri 9am-5.30pm.
