Police in Denmark are investigating the death of an Irish man in Copenhagen.

It is understood that the man was in Denmark to attend tonight's Republic of Ireland soccer international in Aarhus.

A police spokesperson told RTÉ News that a 30-year-old man was discovered in the water of the capital's harbour around 10.30am yesterday morning.

He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead later.

Drogheda United Football Club has expressed its sympathies to the family and friends of the man.

The club named the dead man as David Clerkin.

Police have said they believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

In a statement, the Football Association of Ireland has said that it is "deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a Republic of Ireland supporter in Denmark".

The FAI said that it is working with gardaí and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the matter.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has said it cannot comment on the details of individual cases, but confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family of an individual in Copenhagen.
