A former schools rugby coach and teacher has appeared in court charged with indecent assault offences at a south Dublin college dating back more than 40 years.

John McClean, with an address at Casimir Avenue, Harold’s Cross in Dublin, is accused of indecently assaulting nine students at Terenure College over a 17-year period.

The 73-year-old was arrested this morning by gardaí from Terenure and charged with indecently assaulting the nine secondary school students between 1973 and 1989.

He faces a total of 38 charges, with 14 relating to one alleged victim and 13 relating to another.

The offences are all alleged to have taken place at Terenure College

Mr McClean did not speak during the brief hearing at Dublin District Court and sat with his hand covering his face as Sergeant Jason Miley gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court that he arrested Mr McClean at his home in Casimir Avenue at 7.40am this morning and he was charged at Terenure Garda Station at 9.30am.

He made no reply to each of the 38 charges of indecent assault.

The sergeant also told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed trial on indictment, which means the case will be heard in a higher court and that the gardaí were seeking eight weeks to serve the book of evidence.

There was no garda objection to bail and Mr McClean agreed to sign-on every Saturday at Terenure Garda Station, to have no contact with the injured parties or witnesses directly or indirectly and surrender his passport within 48 hours.

Judge Dermot Simms remanded him on bail on his own bond of €500 to appear again at the Dublin District Court on 9 January.
