Eir has said service has been restored to customers who were affected by yesterday's internet outage.

The outage was caused by a problem with one of the company's Domain Name System servers.

The problem arose at around 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon and the company says full service was restored around twelve hours later.

The outage had hit "a significant percentage" of Eir customers around the country.

The company said there was no indication that the issue was a result of malicious action.

Eir has apologised to customers for the inconvenience.
