The aid agency Trócaire has been asked to cease operations in Pakistan within 60 days.

Seventeen other agencies have also received similar requests in the last fortnight.

No reason has been given for the request by the Ministry for the Interior in Pakistan, which issued the letter.

In a statement to RTÉ News, Trócaire confirmed it had received are request from the Pakistani government and said it intended appealing the decision.

A spokesman said the agency would not be commenting until the appeal process was complete.

Separately, the NGO Action Aid, which also received the letter instructing it to cease operations, described the Pakistani government's move as "an attack on civil society and human rights organisations".

In a statement to RTÉ News, Trócaire said:

"Trócaire can confirm that it is one of a number of international development organisations to have received a letter from the Pakistan government requesting that we cease operations in the country within 60 days. The letter provides for an opportunity to re-apply for registration, but only after six months. The communication provides no reason for the decision."

Last year, Trócaire's programming in Pakistan directly benefited more than 120,000 people, as well as indirectly benefitting 1.3 million people, with a country budget of €4.1 million.

Trócaire is working with 15 local organisations to assist communities in 13 districts across Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement to RTÉ News this evening that it is liaising closely with Trócaire on the matter. The department said: "it consistently stresses the importance of vibrant civil society as a key enabler of development."
