A competition for gardaí seeking promotion to the rank of sergeant has been delayed because of a threat of legal action.
Over 1,400 have been interviewed and are awaiting completion of the final round of interviews before the successful applicants can be announced.
RTÉ News understands that a Garda who was not recalled to the final round of interviews has threatened legal action.
The competition was supposed to have been completed by the end of this month.
Garda Headquarters said this evening that it is aware of a potential legal action.
It now says it hopes to be in a position to proceed with a minimum of delay.
