Sub-contractors who have been left out of pocket the liquidation of the Sammon construction firm have again called for the State to intervene to ensure they receive some payment.

Representatives met officials from the Office of Government Procurement and the National Development Finance Agency today to see if some kind of resolution can be found.

The future of five school building projects was put into doubt earlier this summer after the collapse of the building company Carillion which in turn led to the liquidation of Sammon.

Today's meeting was organised by Labour Party leader Brendan Howlin.

Speaking after the discussions, Deputy Howlin said there had to be something immoral about the occupation by the State of a school that has not been paid for in terms of the subcontractors that have not been properly renumerated.

Asked if he is in favour of students using the school in the event of the pay row still being unresolved, he said everyone wanted to see the schools in question being used, but said there had to be a process where those who built them are paid.

He said officials from the two offices listened to the concerns raised by the sub-contractors and that those officials will now liaise with the Department of Education and others on the matter.
