A man has died after his boat overturned off the Conamara (Connemara) coast.

The incident happened shortly after 4.30pm when the man was boating near Cruagh Island.

He was the only person on board the vessel.

Coast Guard and RNLI personnel arrived at the scene soon afterwards and the man was taken from the water.

He was airlifted to University Hospital Galway, where he was pronounced dead this evening.

It is understood he was in his early 50s and from the local area.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out tomorrow.

The circumstances surrounding the incident will be examined by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board.
