A decision on whether the United States will impose tariffs on steel and aluminium from the European Union, Canada and Mexico has been postponed until June, according to the White House.
US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium in March, but a temporary exemption was introduced while talks continued.
The exemption had been due to expire this morning but last night the White House announced that the EU, Canada and Mexico would be given an extension of one month to allow negotiations continue.
The EU is seeking a permanent and unconditional exemption from the tariffs.
There are fears that the controversial tariffs could start a trade war.
The EU has threatened to impose tariffs of its own on US imports in retaliation.
The US has also reached a deal with South Korea on steel imports, and agreements in principle with Argentina, Australia and Brazil, the details of which will be finalised soon, the White House said.
